What does bare root mean?

Like most catalogs, we send our tree and shrub plants without soil on the roots. The

plants are dormant so it is a safe way for them to travel. When plants are dormant,

they are hibernating. It's like they're asleep. Many plants go dormant to protect

themselves. For example, during the fall many trees droptheir leaves and enter dormancy

for protection from the cold temperatures of winter. The best time to move plants from

a nursery to their new home is during their dormant period. They wake up

(break dormancy) ready for vigorous growth.
