Hosta 'Honeybells'

 Hosta 'Honeybells'

Vigorous and robust!  With large, wide leaves that vary in color according to their exposure to sun, this popular variety of Hosta makes an excellent groundcover adding a hint of the tropics to gardens in cold weather climates.  Fragrant light-lavender, almost white flowers bloom on long stems from mid July through fall.  This variety is one of the few Hosta that can tolerate sun.  Leaves are a wonderful shade of green when planted in full shade and a lovely lime to yellow-green with more exposure to the sun.

Sun: full sun - full shade                        Height: 15 to 20 inches

Blooms: summer - fall                    Zones: 3 through 8

Joe-Pye Plant

Eupatorium purpureum

This tall Missouri native is a great plant for the back of the border.  It likes moist soil and naturalizes easily.  Stems are upright, thick, round, and purple with whorls of leaves.  The vanilla-scented blooms attract butterflies and are rosy red flat topped clusters that fade to rusty brown in fall.  Leave the seed heads for winter structural interest and to attract birds to eat the seeds.

Sun:  full sun to partial shade                     Height: 4-6 feet

Blooms:  summer to fall                              Zones:  4-9

Attracts:  butterflies and birds                   Excellent cut flower
