Hardy Pampas Grass

 Saccharum ravennae

A popular ornamental grass with creamy-white plumes appearing in late summer and lasting for months on end, the Saccharum ravennae is a landscaping favorite.  This variety may grow as tall as 10’ with a 6’ spread, so choose its permanent home carefully.  Avoid planting too close to the house where in just a few growing seasons its massive size will upset the original proportions appreciated when the plant was small. Use it to screen unsightly areas or as an accent plant in large-scale landscapes. Cut its bountiful plumes to use in fresh arrangements or spray with hairspray and hang upside down for dried flower arrangements.
