The size, color, and texture of Russian Sage make it the perfect backdrop for many perennial plants.  I like it with Black-eyed Susan, Gold Yarrow, Monarda, and Stella d'Oro Daylilies.

Russian Sage

 Perovskia atriplicifolia

Add contrast in color, texture and height to your perennial garden with a backdrop of Russian Sage.  Upright, slender stems with feathery silvery-‘sage’ green foliage, this hardy perennial withstands hot summers, full sun and dry soil.  The plant will grow 3 to 4 feet and keep its rounded shape making it an ideal plant for a hedge that is light and wispy in appearance.  Lavender flowers appear on spires mid to late summer and last through fall.  Use stems and blooms for fresh cut-flower arrangements or dry them and use them in wreaths and swags.

This classic blooms in the spring and by summer the plant fades away.  Combine it with Baptisia and Candytuft that will bloom with it and fill in space later with its shrubby plant.  Add other late bloomers like Hardy Hibiscus and White Coneflowers.     CR

Oriental Poppy

 Papaver orientale

This beauty is a classic scarlet red hybrid  Oriental Poppy. The velvety fringed flower petals bloom in May and June on three foot tall plants.  Plant them in masses or as accent plants.  They love well drained soil and in appreciation they will multiply and return for years.
